COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Postal Service sent a letter to residents in Hallsboro and Lake Waccamaw last week informing them the post offices in those towns could soon be consolidated.
Postal officials are considering closing the post office in Lake Waccamaw and having residents drive five miles to the post office in Hallsboro, but the facility in Lake Waccamaw is larger.
Town council members in Lake Waccamaw will meet Tuesday night to discuss passing a resolution showing they're in favor of the town keeping its post office. They plan to point out the post office's size and that Lake Waccamaw does more business.
Town officials in Lake Waccamaw believe the post office is being leased while the facility in Hallsboro is owned by the Postal Service.
U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre announced Tuesday that he will work with Mayor Ivan Wilson and the citizens of Lake Waccamaw to fight for the continuation of the post office.
"I will stand with the citizens of Lake Waccamaw and do all I can to keep their Post Office open and operational," McIntyre stated. "Post offices are an important component of day-to-day living offering valuable services to residents and businesses. We have talked with Mayor Wilson and reassured him of our commitment to the Lake Waccamaw Post Office, and we will work together to get the U.S. Postal Service the important details and facts about the Lake Waccamaw Post Office."
A community meeting will be held at East Columbus High School on Wednesday, Dec. 14 from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. to explain the consolidation and address community concerns.
