Petition helps change the outcome of some breeds

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC (WECT) – More than 60,000 people have signed a petition online in an effort to save so-called aggressive dog breeds from the Cumberland County Animal Shelter.

According to change.org, a resident in Iowa heard about a proposal in Cumberland County to kill all dogs that resemble the specified breeds be killed within 72 hours of entering the shelter and started a petition.  Within three days more than 60,000 joined her campaign.

"Originally, I created it as a knee-jerk response to seeing the initial report on the 72-hour kill proposal," said Iowa resident Christine Selak. "Even though I'm out here in Iowa, I felt it was a problem that everyone needed to hear about, and it seems like that was justified since there were so many local and international responses to my campaign."

Nearly 100 people showed up at the Animal Control Board's meeting Monday night and because of the backlash to the board's idea, Animal Control decided to back off the proposal, according to change.org.

Instead, the control board decided to do background checks on the people who are trying to adopt aggressive breeds.  The Cumberland County commission will still have to approve the policy.
