WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Fans of Japanese culture and style gathered downtown Sunday afternoon to celebrate their shared interests.

The event was the Aniwave Festival's fifth year in the Port City.

Organizers said this is the only event in the area where Anime, Manga and Japanese culture fans gather. Organizer Whitney Rooks said there are other events in North Carolina and organizers felt it was time to create an event for fans in southeastern North Carolina.

About 500 people came out to Sunday's event. Many of them dressed up as anime characters and original characters. But, not everyone dressed to the genre.

"I've seen comic book characters and there have been Stormtroopers known to come. So it's not just Anime," Rooks said. "Anybody who wants to wear a costume can. We're not going to turn you away for not having an anime style costume."

Local vendors sold products, making it the perfect time to pick up something for the holidays.
