WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It's a cult classic that has steep roots in Wilmington. The movie Blue Velvet is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and now a local theater company is giving the flick new life.
TheatreNOW is staging the first ever read-through of Blue Velvet The Musical. It's based on the 1986 movie directed by David Lynch and starring Dennis Hopper and Isabella Rossellini.
Veteran theater alums Alisa Harris, Bryan Putnam and Anthony Lawson are responsible for the score, the book, and putting the production together. They say the show follows the same feel as the movie, but the violent scenes will be staged just a bit differently.
"Some of the more salacious parts of the show that are very, very risque are all put to music and all put to songs," said Harris. "So it kind of makes the sexual violence a little more palatable."
The show is being performed as part of the Cucalorus Film Festival and will have very little sets or costumes.
"Basically it's for a film loving audience to actually hear the words for the first time and hear this music for the first time and to provide feedback," said Harris.
The staged reading will take place Saturday, November 12 at 1:00pm at City Stage in downtown Wilmington. The show is recommended for those 18 years and older. To listen to a clip of music from the show, click here.
