Good prospects on eliminating New Hanover County's air-quality problems

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Commissioner Rick Catlin says he held a conference call with Progress-Energy Tuesday morning to update them on the latest data collected on the county's air quality and sulfur dioxide levels.

According to Catlin, Progress Energy has been a good corporate partner with New Hanover County and its efforts to eliminate New Hanover County's non-attainment problem.

Catlin says this year's sulfur dioxide levels are below the Environmental Protection Agency's standard, but added that if next years levels don't drop, the average of the past three years puts things dangerously close to the limit.

Catlin also recently visited Washington, D.C. to request the EPA give the county until 2012 to get levels below their standards.
