Earthquake in Iran kills thousands

At least 5,000 people are dead after an earthquake in the

ian city of Bam.

Local officials say the death toll could reach up to 12,000. Tehran is asking for international help; the U.S. is promising to send some.

's president says the disaster is to massive for the country to handle alone. President Bush has promised to send aid, as have several European countries.

The U.S. will be sending relief aid. White House spokesman Scott McClellan called it a "terrible tragedy" and said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured and the families of those who were killed."
