
U.S. Army Sergeant Jason Thigpen speaking at the ceremony.WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A Wilmington veteran joined a prestigious list as he received a Purple Heart for fighting for our country on Wednesday.
U.S. Army Sergeant Jason Thigpen was awarded the honorable metal at the Manley-Reece Veterans of Foreign Wars Post off of Carolina Beach Road. Thigpen, who's currently enrolled at UNCW, received the Purple Heart for wounds he received while fighting in Iraq back in 2009.
When Thigpen spoke at the ceremony, he used it as a platform to raise awareness by talking about the support that fellow servicemen and women will need when they return home from overseas.
