Parking fees could soon be changing in downtown Wilmington.
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Leaders in Wilmington will talk
about parking fees in the downtown area during their city council meeting
Tuesday night.
There are several proposed changes to parking fees in hopes
of filling an $800,000 deficit to the parking fund.
Council members will discuss a way to close a loophole that
currently allows for free parking in city decks when they are not manned. Instead, the city would begin collecting fees
in city decks 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
They will also discuss increasing the festival/event deck
flat fee from $5 to $7; increase the daily maximum/lost ticket fee from $5 to
$8; and increase parking tickets from a $15 fine to $20.
City leaders will also consider reducing the "first minutes
free" in city decks from 90 minutes to 15 minutes.
Council members voted in September to change meters from one
hour limits to two hour limits along Front Street between Market and Walnut
Streets.
