Friday evening traffic accidents

Two traffic incidents this afternoon kept Wilmington Police and E-M-S workers busy.

It was a case of spontaneous combustion for one driver. He went into a bank across from U-N-C-W to cash a check, and when he came out, smoke was pouring from the hood of the car. The driver was able to get a fire extinguisher, but it was too late to save the engine compartment.

Less than a mile away at almost the same time, a two-car collision on Sigmon Road near Alleigh's resulted in a S-U-V flipped over. The occupants managed to scramble out of the upended vehicle on their own and there appeared to be no serious injuries, but the usually heavy Friday afternoon traffic was backed up in the area.
