Sunset Beach Bridge Has Been Reopened

Hundreds of people on Sunset Beach were trapped on the Barrier Island overnight after an accident shut down the Old Pontoon Bridge. Now, the Sunset Beach Bridge is open to residents coming on and off the bridge.

At some point late Monday evening the Sunset Beach Bridge opened and then jammed. Several pilings snapped, causing a loss of stability. A crane was holding up the bridge while state crews from the Department of Transportation started repairing the bridge.

Because this bridge was the only access on and off the Barrier Island, no pedestrians or vehicle traffic were allowed over the bridge. The Pontoon Bridge has been the scene of controversy over the years. Many believe the old bridge should have been replaced a long time ago.
