Chadbourn council members discuss waste dumping

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Chadbourn town council members will discuss Tuesday night the issue of waste dumping in the town.

Council member Fax Rector said he recently saw someone who works for a company in Nakina dumping sewer waste in a ditch in Chadbourn.

Rector said he called the town's police chief and the chief told him he caught the man doing the same thing before.

After talking with town manager Stevie Cox, Rector said he realized there's an agreement to allow companies to dump waste in manholes, which lead to the town's sewer treatment plant.

According to Cox, before companies started dumping waste to the sewer plant, sewer workers would have to use dog food pellets for bacteria to eat.

Rector said the ordinance was passed years ago, before many council members were elected.  That's why he wanted to bring it to their attention.
