WILMINGTON, NC (WSFX) - UNC Wilmington officials released a report concerning a summer near-campus shooting and recommendations to the university's response.
The shooting happened around 4:20 p.m. at the Seahawk Square Apartment Complex on July 29th. The report says proper procedures were followed but the information could have been sent out more quickly.
The campus police chief told his staff to send out a campus-wide emergency alert via phone, text and email when the shooting was reported, but the alert was never sent.
The report goes on to recommend some steps that could lead to better communication if there is a future situation.
"We've already installed a new computer within our communications center and the only thing it's going to support is the emergency messaging system," said UNCW Police Chief David Donaldson.
Another issue campus authorities are addressing is the gray area of on-campus versus off-campus incidents.
"We need to identify the locations where the university has a specific invested interest and make sure we have the appropriate protocols in place," said Donaldson.
The Seahawk Square shooting was technically off-campus but close enough to call for UNCW enforcement. UNCW is talking with New Hanover County Emergency Management and the Wilmington Police Department about expanding campus law enforcement boundaries.
