Construction to begin on new hotel in downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Downtown Wilmington is getting a new hotel.

Graham Construction tells WECT that it received building permits from Wilmington City Council members Friday.

Graham Construction is based in Concord, North Carolina.

The group will build a new Courtyard Marriot along 2nd and Grace Streets in downtown Wilmington.

The group says the project is not going to be easy because of the age of the city and some construction has already started.

"They drilled five holes 50 feet deep to make sure the soil would be able to hold the weight of the building," says Ernie Speaks, the company's project superintendent.

"A lot of things behind the scenes have been done to make sure the city is safe when we do the construction."

The hotel will have six stories and more than 100 rooms. It will also have a gas fire pit and pool.

Construction is set to begin on September 26, 2011.

Speaks says he hopes to have the hotel finished in 14 months.

The hotel will cost about $12 to $15 million to build.
