WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Dozens of people were able to enjoy some sports on the water Friday, despite the cooler temperatures and any disabilities they may have.
The Wilmington Disabled Athletic Association held their 14th annual Adaptive Water Sports Day at Crocker's Landing Marina.
The event gave individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate in water sport activities like water skiing and kayaking by using updated equipment and assistance by community volunteers.
The main activity for participants is "adapted water skiing," where the ski rope and the ski are attached to the pull boat with a quick release device. The device allows rope to be released from the pull boat as soon as the skier gets in the water. Two "chase" boats (usually jet skis) follow behind the pull boat with trained volunteers who jump in the water with the skier to help them stand up and reposition on the ski.
"It is a truly amazing and inspiring event to witness," said Anita McMahan, a rehabilitation counselor.
