At 7:45 pm Tuesday night the intersection of College Road and Oleander Drive returned to normal after hours of being blocked off.
Traffic was detoured, irritating and delaying hundreds of motorists, and portions of South College Road were closed for five hours due to a downed utility pole from an accident earlier in the afternoon.
A U.S. Marine Corps truck was hauling equipment, apparently from the shipyard to Camp Lejeune, Northbound on South College Road when it attempted a right-hand turn onto Oleander Drive and side swiped what may be the busiest utility pole in Wilmington.
For hours utility crews from Progress Energy, Time Warner Cable and Bell South worked to adjust the appropriate lines, keeping a portion of South College Road closed.
The accident also damaged the utility pole on the opposite side of South College Road, but crews say they can work on that one later without tying up traffic.
