KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) – A commissioner for Kure Beach will run for re-election in November, despite submitting his resignation last month.
Barry Nelder, 64, was arrested in August for possession of drugs during a traffic stop. He was found with .9 grams of marijuana and was under the influence at the time of his arrest, according to a police report.
Nelder decided to resign after the arrest but never removed his name from the election ballot. According to Elections Supervisor Marvin McFayden, the former commissioner is still interested in running.
The Mayor of Kure Beach says he's spoken with Nelder a few times since the arrest and said he's always been in a good mood.
Nelder is scheduled to appear in court next Monday for drug possession.
