School systems decide to cancel class, release students early

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students in New Hanover and Brunswick Counties will not go to school Friday. Pender and Columbus will have a half day dismissal Friday in anticipation of Hurricane Irene.

Staff in New Hanover and Brunswick County have an optional workday.

Pender County Schools will follow their early dismissal policies. The school system will notify parents of dismissal times and procedures using Alert Now.

Bladen and Columbus County Schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. Friday.

The District Office in Bladen County will close at 4 p.m. and six school shelters will open at 6 p.m.

The following schools will become shelters:

  • Bladen Lakes Primary
  • Bladenboro Middle
  • Clarkton School of Discovery
  • East Arcadia
  • Elizabethtown Middle
  • Tar Heel Middle

All after school activities and programs in New Hanover County will be cancelled on Friday.  Pre-kindergarten students begin school via a staggered enrollment process on August 29, so they will not be impacted by the half day on Friday.

New Hanover County has announced plans to open shelters at 6 p.m. on Friday.

NHC school officials will make a decision about next week's schedule by late Sunday.
