NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT)-You have time to start preparing for Hurricane Irene and building your emergency hurricane kit.
If you don't have a generator, now could be a good time to start thinking about buying one.
WECT talked to the folks over at Sears in Independence Mall.
"People are definitely starting to ask about generators," said Rob Hudson, assistant manager at Sears, "They're coming in to the store to check them out. So, people are definitely starting to get prepared which shows that the storm is a definite possibility."
If you plan on buying from them, you'd better hurry. There's only 10 in stock but more will be ordered.
While you're busy preparing your emergency hurricane kit, New Hanover County wants you to remember your property.
County officials are reminding everyone to clear any debris that collects at drains near your property.
With all the water that's expected to hit our area, county engineers want to make sure it has plenty of places to run off. The National Flood Insurance Program says the average cost of flood damage from a hurricane is $48,000 per house.
And don't forget about your retention ponds. Engineers ask that you empty them to collect any extra rain water.
