Spivey leaves West Columbus as football coach

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — T.J. Spivey has stepped down as head football coach at West Columbus before ever coaching a game or running an official practice.

The first-year head coach resigned Monday, just 12 days before the start of the season to take a position at the Columbus County Boys and Girls home as a social studies teacher.

Spivey didn't return phone calls made to him, but did send a text that said "I have resigned from West Columbus."

"I think he just got in over his head from the get go," said West Columbus athletics director Mitch McCleney. "Unfortunately we've been in this position before, so we'll just deal with it."

Leading up to the 2009 season, then head coach Pat Byrd resigned to join the West Bladen staff as a defensive coordinator. Dennis Bannick was approved as Byrd's successor less than a week later.

West Columbus officials are hoping to move just as fast this time around.

"I'll meet with our principal today to see if he's reached out to anyone or if anyone has contacted him about the opening," McCleney said. "It's just all happened so fast."

McCleney said there is a possibility that he could take over the team on an interim basis.

The Vikings finished the 2010 season with a 1-10 overall record and haven't had a winning season since an 8-5 mark in 2005.
