TAR HEEL, NC (WECT) - The town of Tar Heel in Bladen County appears to be lacking community spirit.
As the two week filing period for municipal office came to a close in North Carolina, no one in town signed up to run for office. The open positions include mayor and three members of town council.
The Bladen County Board of Elections voted not to extend the filing period for Tar Heel. So, the ballot will be printed with open spaces for the town allowing write-in candidates. The people with the most write-in votes will represent the town.
The current office holders include Mayor Ricky Martin, Councilwoman Betty Jo Barnes, Councilwoman Amy Davis and Councilwoman Betty Jo Merritt.
According to the most recent census, 117 people live in Tar Heel.
