WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a homicide that happened in the 300 block of Pine Valley Drive early Monday morning.

According to Officer Brandon Reece, Carol Ann Johnson, 59, was found dead in the home early Monday morning. Police say a 911 call was placed around 3:00 a.m.  Fire and EMS were dispatched and contacted police when they arrived to the scene.

The 911 call came from the victim's fiance, who told dispatch operators that he had just got back from working at target.  He said he found Johnson on the floor in the kitchen.

"When I got here the front door was unlocked," the caller told 911.  He said it was unusual for it to be unlocked.

The caller told the dispatch operator that Johnson's body was cold.  He said she was going to stay up until  midnight because she always rings her grandmother's bell at 12:01 for the 4th of July.

Neighbors said Johnson was a kind woman with no children who lived alone on Pine Valley Drive for about 15 years.  They said she was engaged to her boyfriend of three years, who had recently moved in.

Johnson's co-workers at a wholesale shop on South College Road were shocked to hear of her death.

"We're going to miss her.  Absolutely," said co-workers Jessie Dobson and Connie Grove.  "She was a terrific person.  And she loved her family, and her brother is very ill right now and that's all she could talk about was how much she loved her brother.  Her brothers and her nieces and she just loved her family."

Johnson's co-workers said she had an infectious laugh and had worked with them for five years.  She had the Fourth of July holiday off from work, but she and her friends had celebrated a birthday with her Saturday.

Police aren't releasing any information about how the person died.

This is the fifth homicide in the city of Wilmington for 2011. Arrests have been made in only two of the deaths.  Those include the stabbing of Tarron Jones.  Jones was killed outside of the Rhino Club in January.  The second arrest is in connection to the shooting death of Roshad Jenkins.  He was shot in the Hillcrest Community in March.

Other deaths include Cornelius Blanks, who was shot in Club 609 in May.

Tony Leon Harris was found shot on the front porch of a house just last week.

The Wilmington Police Department is requesting that anyone with information about the investigation or important facts pertaining to the victim please call the WPD front desk at 910-343-3600 or TEXT-A-TIP to CRIMES (274637) and begin the text message with TIP708.
