Wilmington teen shot and killed

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Thursday night.

According to officials, 16-year-old Tony Leon Harris, Jr. was found lying on the front porch of 916 1/2 North Fifth Avenue around 7:30 p.m.

Ann Ashe said she found TJ, as he was commonly known, on her front porch, called 911 and rescue crews arrived within four minutes.  The woman told 911 dispatch operators that TJ had blood on his chest.

At the beginning of the call she said the teen was not alert, but breathing heavily.  She said it appeared as if the young man had multiple wounds.

Ashe said TJ was talking when she first found him on her porch, so she expected him to survive the shooting.

Harris was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Ashe said TJ brought smiles and laughter to the community and he will be missed.

"Whoever did this to him to a lot from this community," said Ashe.

She said her neighborhood has changed in the last month or so, and she's worried that this won't be the last time the community mourns a loss like TJ.

No arrests have been made in the case at this time.
