NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - During the Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority meeting Thursday, board members and WAVE Transit Director Albert Eby discussed the possibility of partnering with Greyhound.
Eby said he has talked with Greyhound officials and they are considering closing the station downtown to move their services into Forden Station, which is WAVE's new facility off Cando Street in Wilmington.
"It'll be a great amenity for community and Greyhound customers," said Eby. "They could get off an intercity bus from Raleigh, link directly into our system without walking with luggage like they currently do downtown."
He also believes it would make Greyhound customers more accessible to restaurants and businesses in Wilmington.
Eby said the next step is to discuss negotiations with officials at Greyhound to figure the type of fees they'll receive from them to operate services on their behalf.
Also during the meeting, transportation authority board members learned they have $121,000 more in their budget than expected due to an increase in ridership.
According to Eby the number of passengers has doubled over the past eleven months. He thinks the bus routes and high gas prices have played a role in the ridership increase.
