NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Wednesday the North Carolina State Controller spent the afternoon in New Hanover County rolling out a new database that will change the criminal justice system.
The system, called CJLEADS (Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Automated Data Services) is being rolled out gradually throughout the state.
State Controller David McCoy was at Cape Fear Community College's North Campus to introduce the system to Columbus, Bladen, Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties.
The online system links the courts, prisons, and law enforcement agencies under one statewide database. It allows members of the criminal justice system to access an offender's history, photo, gang affiliation, warrants, and more.
There are also warnings for law enforcement officers that pop up next to an offender or suspect's name if the person has a history of violence or weapons violations.
CJLEADS can only be accessed by members of the criminal justice system, with law enforcement officers having the highest privileges. McCoy said it has already proven to be a valuable asset for North Carolina's officers.
CJLEADS will be rolled out one area at a time before it's accessible statewide in 2012.
