COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – School officials in Columbus County have already begun laying off employees in anticipation of the general assembly expected to override Gov. Bev Perdue's budget veto Wednesday.
According to Interim Superintendent Alan Faulk, Columbus County schools will lose $1.9 million if the governor's veto is overturned.
Faulk said so far, one teacher and six teacher assistants have lost their jobs in Columbus County.
The interim superintendent said the school system usually receives $500,000 in lottery funding that goes towards capital projects. Faulk says without that money many schools would need serious repairs.
