RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory and other North Carolina conservative leaders say they're confident last year's tax overhaul law will result in more money in the hands of state residents - and more jobs. McCrory used Tuesday's tax filing deadline to celebrate lower income and corporate income tax rates approved recently by the legislature.

ATLANTA (AP) - A prosecutor says the FBI is still seeking additional suspects in the case of a kidnapping in which the father of a North Carolina prosecutor was held several days before being freed by agents. A judge on Tuesday, meanwhile, denied bond for five people arrested and accused in the abduction of Frank Arthur Janssen from his Wake Forest home on April 5.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The nation's top cigarette makers say they've made annual payments as part of a settlement in which some companies are paying states billions for smoking-related health care costs. Greensboro-based Lorillard Inc. paid $1.1 billion of the annual settlement money into an account ordered under a 1998 Master Settlement Agreement.

TARBORO, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty Tarboro police officer is dead after the van he was driving collided with an excavator truck in Edgecombe County. Chief Damon Williams said 46-year-old Charles Johnson, a 24-year veteran of the force, was killed Tuesday.
