WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - For the last year, the Wilmington community has gathered in support of a young boy battling cancer.

Saturday, Zack Mayo passed away after the long battle, according to a statement posted this morning on the family's website.

Mayo was a student at Parsley Elementary School who had a scooter accident at the start of last summer and then experienced serious complications.  Doctors found a cancerous tumor on his liver and he had to be rushed to Chapel Hill for treatment.

For the last several months, he's been at Cincinnati Children's Hospital for treatment.

The community has sponsored a blood drive and most recently a fundraiser at Halligan's earlier this month.
