A plane crashed in Pender county, and the pilot is dead. The pilot has been identified as sixty nine year old Phillip Whitty of Hampstead. The plane went down about a half mile from a small landing strip in Holly Ridge. It was a homebuilt P-51 Mustang a replica of a World War II plane. It was only supposed to be in the air for a test flight, but then there were mechanical problems. An eyewitness says the plane started misfiring while the pilot was on his final approach. The Federal Aviation Administration has sent a team of investigators to the crash scene.
