COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Danny Thomas, a man found guilty earlier this month of killing four people in Columbus County in 2005, was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Thomas is accused of killing Craig Williams in addition to newlyweds Dennis and Regina Inman and Regina's brother.
A jury began deliberating last week, but struggled to reach an unanimous decision. The jurors continually voted 11-1 and told the judge they didn't think they'd be able to agree on a sentence. The majority of the jurors voted for Thomas to receive the death sentence.
After several days of the same vote, the judge released the jurors Wednesday afternoon.
Since the jury could not reach a unanimous decision, the judge referred to state statue which says the defendant in a death penalty case would spend life in prison without parole.
The jury was trying to decide if Thomas should spend life in prison or be put to death for his crimes.
