Surf City Promenade development delayed

Development for Surf City Promenade delayed. Development for Surf City Promenade delayed.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The new promenade in Surf City will feature several movie theaters, bowling alleys and dining areas.  It's expected to create nearly 250 jobs.  The entertainment complex was supposed to open in June 2011, but that's not going to happen.

The 60,000 square foot facility is a little more than a pile of dirt right now.  There is scattered equipment in the area, stationary machines and piles of unused ground materials.

Some people in Pender County are used to projects falling through, but many hope the Surf City entertainment complex will be the exception.  Mayfaire in Wilmington is the next closest entertainment center for Surf City residents.

Pender County loses $12 million a year as people head to Wilmington or Jacksonville for a little fun.

Contractors of the $10 million promenade project said they had to fire the company in charge of the ground work, which set them back on their development timeline.  They are still excited about the project and hope to have it complete by spring 2012.
