NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man was killed early Sunday morning when shots rang out around 2:00 on Truesdale Road, near N. Kerr Avenue, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
"Somebody got shot, man," a witness told 911 operators. "He's laying in my driveway."
When deputies arrived to the scene, they found Harold Davis II near a vehicle in the driveway of 2333 Truesdale Road. It appeared he had been shot two times.
A neighbor also called 911 and said she heard about eight shots then a car speeding off. Neither caller was able to give authorities a description of the shooter or the vehicle they were in.
"I got a phone call from my dad saying he heard gunshots and he walked down the road saw my brother's car and my brother was in the road," said Harold's sister Amanda Davis.
According to Harold's family, the man who lives at the house where his body was found often washes cars and sometimes people go there to hang out.
"There's not a time Wayne Clark is at home and there's a bunch of people in his yard and he's not in the house," said Amanda. "He's always out in the yard with people who are there."
When the homeowner called 911, he told operators he had gone back inside to get a beer and when he heard the gunshots he hit the ground. That's when he looked out to see Harold lying in his driveway.
Amanda said her brother was finally starting to turn his life around. He had spent several years in prison, but recently started working as a landscaper and in home security.
Family members hope someone in the small community will come forward with information regarding Harold's death.
Harold did not have life insurance, so family members have placed donation jars at Casey's Buffett off Oleander Drive and other places.
A viewing will be held Friday night at Davis Funeral Home off Sixth and Dawson in Wilmington from 6-8. His funeral is Saturday morning at 11:00 in the same location.
