Preliminary reports: 6 tornadoes touch down in southeastern NC

SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WECT) – Six tornadoes touched down in Southeastern North Carolina Thursday, according to preliminary reports.

One tornado touched down in Columbus County and four tornadoes are confirmed in Pender County. Late Friday night the National Weather Service confirmed a 6th tornado near Rose Hill in Duplin County.

Members of the National Weather Service said an EF 0 tornado was spotted on Old Lake Road, which is south of the town of Council near the Columbus/Bladen County line.  An EF 0 is the weakest storm on the scale, but winds reach up to 75 mph.

In Pender County, an EF 1 with winds up to 110 mph was seen south of Atkinson and was on the ground for less than a mile.  Three silos and a large barn were destroy on Slocum Trail Road.

Another tornado formed southwest of Atkinson and became a long track tornado with winds up to 90 mph. It tracked just south of Atkinson. It then crossed near Highway 53 and Point Caswell Road.  It lifted just as it crossed Highway 421. The track was rated as EF0 and was around 6 miles long.

Another EF1 tornado was confirmed to have moved over Shiloh Road and lifted just after crossing Penderlea Highway. That tornado was on the ground around 3 miles.

An EF0 tornado formed just southwest of Willard.  Significant damage was done to a turkey house and several turkeys were killed.

Near Rose Hill, an EF1 tornado touched down and was on the ground for about a mile and a half. The tornado had winds of 95 mph and had a damage path about 100 yards width. Several metal structures including a hog farm were destroyed.
