PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A young girl in Pender County was airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill Monday night after being attacked by a pit bull earlier in the day.

According to Sheriff Carson Smith, the 4-year-old was attacked in the 6000 block of Piney Woods Drive in Burgaw.  She was initially air lifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center until she was stabilized.

Interim Health Director Wayne Raynor said the little girl had surgery overnight and is recovering.  He said she suffered upper body injuries, but could not give any other details.

Stephen Throneburg with animal control said the pit bull has given them no trouble since it was detained.  The dog will be kept for ten days to check for rabies, which is standard procedure.

According to Throneburg the little was visiting family at the time of the incident and had wandered to the back of the house where the dog was tied up.

Pender County Animal Control is investigating the attack.
