Seahawks use 10 pitchers in loss

UNCW Press Release

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – NC State's Matt Bergquist drove in a career-high seven runs on three hits as North Carolina State ran past UNCW, 19-5, in college baseball action Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Wolfpack was able to avenge a loss last week to the Seahawks with the win and improved to 23-16 with its fourth consecutive win. With the loss, UNCW saw its record fall to 21-16 overall.

Bergquist had a pair of two-run singles and a two-run triple on his career day.

In the first inning, Tarran Senay tripled in two runs off losing pitcher Ryan Leach (1-3), who last just one inning after surrendering five runs, four earned on three hits and three walks.

A six-run second inning for the Wolfpack made it 10-0. NCSU used three hits, three walks and a hit batter to build that lead. Bergquist singled in two runs and would later triple in two runs in the fifth that gave the Wolfpack a 14-3 lead.

NCSU starter Ethan Ogburn allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings, but did not figure in the decision. Reliever Rey Cotilla (1-0) earned the win with two innings of shutout baseball.

UNCW's Andrew Cain belted his fifth and sixth homers of the season to extend his career-high hitting streak to 12 games.

Joining Bergquist with three-hit games were Pratt Maynard and John Gianis, who also scored four runs.

The Seahawks visit Hempstead, N.Y., this weekend for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series against Hofstra. The series begins on Friday.
