BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Deputies in Brunswick County confirm there have been no arrests yet in the shooting death of a senior at South Brunswick High School over the weekend.

Marcus Hankins, a football player as well for South Brunswick, was shot and killed Saturday morning.  The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office said the incident occurred in the Bolivia area around 1am.

Hankins, was transported to the Brunswick Community Hospital Emergency Room and pronounced deceased.  Hankins was attending a private social function at the Democratic Headquarters when the incident occurred.  The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says the investigation remains on going at this time.

South Brunswick Athletics Director Chris Roehner confirmed the incident to WECT Saturday morning.

"I received a call sometime last night and was told that Marcus had been killed," Chris Roehner said.  "My principal told me that grief counselors will be on campus Monday, that's about all I know right now."

Just this past week Marcus and South Brunswick Head Coach Roman Kelley had talked about Marcus playing College Football.

"Marcus was a Division One player,"  Roman Kelley said.  "He could have played for many small schools, but we were looking at the Junior College route so some bigger schools could get a look at him."

Hankins was a WECT player of the week during his senior season that saw the Cougars finish the year with a program record for wins.
