Police: Mom wrestles son away from kidnapper

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police say a mother was able to wrestle her son away from a man who attempted to kidnap the boy at a park in uptown Charlotte Sunday evening and police have now released images of the man thanks to a fast food meal that was found at the scene.

The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. at Frazier Park which is located on W. Fourth Street.

Camilla McCall says she is still traumatized over what happened to her 3-year-old son.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, McCall was at the park with her little boy. He was riding his bicycle and his mother was by his side.

McCall told police a man walked past them, turned around, and grabbed her son around the waist.

"He just snatched him around the waist off the bike and that's when I jumped on, and grabbed Liam and that's when we were fighting about him," McCall said on Monday.

Police said she grabbed the man, and wrestled him to the ground.

McCall told WBTV that when the man ran, he dropped a meal from a nearby Bojangles, including the receipt. She said that CMPD's crime lab took the meal and is hoping to be able to get the suspect's fingerprint from the box.

"The only thing I could think of is--I've got to hold on to him as tight as I can," McCall said.

McCall was able to get her son away from the man. She says the man then got up and started walking down the sidewalk and into the park.

The receipt contained the address where the food was purchased.

On Tuesday, police released images that were taken inside the Bojangles store at 1402 West Trade Street where the suspect ordered his meal before the alleged attack.

Police said the subject was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, blue jean jacket, khaki pants, white tennis shoes or boots, and had a baseball style hat on with the number 83 (possibly a Nascar themed hat).

McCall told police the man smelled of alcohol.

Officers circulated the area and spoke with multiple people inside the park regarding the suspect, but they were unable to find him.

CMPD Sergeant Nick Pellicone is promising that police will raise their profile in the park.

"We'll have more of a presence in that area to alleviate some of the concerns of the residents down in that area," he said. "We'll also try to do some prevention measures."

The boy was not injured, the police report said.
