Ashley Barker joined WECT in February 2011 as the Community Web Producer. She writes for and manages the WECT Communities website and is always looking for neighborhood news.
Prior to coming to WECT, Ashley worked part time for over four years in the sports department of the Wilmington StarNews, while attending the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
She graduated in December of 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and minors in Journalism and Creative Writing.
During her time as a Seahawk, she was published in the student newspaper, The Seahawk, and built a staff of writers as the Opinion Editor her final year.
Ashley grew up in a small suburb outside of Fayetteville and became interested in media at a young age. She attended a week-long summer workshop at The Fayetteville Observer and was instantly hooked to the fast-paced, deadline-driven world that is the news.
Although she thought she'd end up landing another newspaper job after graduating, Ashley is thrilled to be a part of the WECT-TV team.
She never imagined that she would learn so much about the Southport, Myrtle Grove, Elizabethtown, Shallotte, Tabor City, South College, Pleasure Island, Hampstead, Burgaw, Wrightsville Beach, Whiteville, Ogden and downtown Wilmington communities. But, she's quickly becoming a neighborhood expert.
