Senator Goolsby questions Gov. Perdue's plans to shut down Marine Tech program

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Senator Thom Goolsby was in Wilmington Friday to meet with Cape Fear Community College officials regarding Governor Bev Perdue's plans to shut down the Marine Technology program at the school.

Goolsby has questioned Perdue's action because he's seen the program's successful placement of graduates in good jobs.

He says the program has been at maximum enrollment of 148 students for several years and has placed 94 percent of its graduates in the job force.

Perdue has promised to protect education funding, but has proposed cutting the supplemental funding of the CFCC Marine Tech program.

The program's curriculum is designed to provide practical skills and academic background essential for success in the area of marine scientific support.  It prepares students to use and maintain sophisticated equipment.
