WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -Three people reported problems to the See, Click, Fix section of WECT.com, worried that the left turn arrow at Carolina Beach and Sanders roads had been removed.

Kimberly reported seeing 4-5 cars lined up and Ashley wrote that people are either getting backed up or taking their chances with the oncoming traffic. David reported seeing three cars go through the yellow/red light in total frustration and the last car was almost broad-sided.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the left turn arrow never left.

"I reviewed the signal at Sanders and US 421 and the problem is the protected (green) arrow for the left turn is on a 15 second delay, so if no one is on the signal loop in the lane when the phase comes back to that signal then the arrow will not come up so the motorist will not see it," said Joe Chance with the NCDOT.  "I have lowered the delay to 10 seconds so this should help. This is a protected permitted (yellow) signal so even when the arrow is not there motorist can make the movement if the way is clear."

The DOT also watched the intersection closely after getting word of the problem.

"The signal cycled several times and the arrow came up for the motorist when called on," explained Chance.  "Data was taken from the morning hours and it showed the arrow came up when the phase was called on by traffic in the travel lane."
