COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Friends and family are mourning the death of a 28-year-old woman from Whiteville, who was killed in a head-on collision this weekend.

According to authorities, Jennifer Thompson was driving along Sam Potts Highway, near Hallsboro Saturday night around 6:00.

Officials say Thompson drove off onto the right shoulder then jerked the steering wheel to the left, causing the car to veer back on the road and cross the centerline into an oncoming SUV.

Thompson was reportedly thrown from her car.  Brittney Garvin, 22, was driving the SUV and is being treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

According to officials, speed played a role in the accident.  Tow workers said Thompson's car was so destroyed it took two hours to gather all the pieces from the car.

Friends say Thompson had only been married for a month and was full of life.
