NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Republican candidates took the majority Tuesday night for the Board of Commissioners seats.
Rick Catlin, an environmental engineer, took had the most votes taking away more than 31 percent of the total votes. Small business owner Brian Berger was the runner up, collecting just under 27 percent of the vote.
Berger overtook Democrats Deborah Butler and former sheriff Sid Causey for the second spot, which was a bit of surprise even to Berger. He says that he had to overcome a lack of name recognition and a lack of special interest funding to win the seat.
Berger says he intends to represent his special interest group – the tax payers of New Hanover County.
Catlin has plans in Raleigh Thursday to secure funds to help with a water ponding issue at the landfill. He is hopeful his trip will save the tax payers nearly $1 million.
