NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Republican Thom Goolsby will take the seat in the state senate for New Hanover County, according to the unofficial results.
Goolsby was celebrating at Slainte in downtown Wilmington with a pint of Guinness. He's feeling very confident about the numbers that are coming in, holding onto 56.29 percent of the vote so far.
"We had a great turnout of Republicans at the polls," explained Goolsby. "We appreciate all the hard work that everybody's done to help me. This is not sole venture whatsoever. Our party came together and worked really hard for the last many months and this is the result."
The Republican is facing Democrat Jim Leutze, who said a day before the elections he was concerned about the Democratic vote.
Goolsby will replace Senator Julia Boseman who decided not to run for re-election.
