NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It was a big win for Republicans in the race for Board of Education in New Hanover County.
A divide stood between the four Republican candidates, who are in support of neighborhood schools, and the four Democrat candidates who favor socio-economically balanced schools.
Janice Cavenaugh, Don Hayes, Edward Higgins, and Derrick Hickey all shared 15 percent of the total votes. Three of the four candidates are incumbents.
In public debates, the eight candidates have clashed over ways to cut money from the school's budget and bridge the achievement gap.
Based on the precinct map, it appears more people voted from the Noble and Myrtle Grove school districts.
