Sheriff McMahon fights to keep his job in New Hanover Co.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Sheriff Ed McMahon is running to keep his job in New Hanover County, competing against Republican Marc Benson.

Benson is a former investigator with the sheriff's office and now has his eyes on becoming sheriff.

Neither Benson nor McMahon have won an election to hold that spot, as McMahon was appointed by outgoing Sheriff Sid Causey.

Causey retired from the sheriff's office in June 2009 after serving the public for more than 39 years.  Now, he wants to continue serving the community and is running for New Hanover County commissioner.

Voters will choose two of four candidates vying for county commissioner, leaving Causey with a 50/50 chance of winning a seat.

Other contenders include Democrat Deborah Butler, Republican Brian Berger, and Republican Rick Catlin.
