BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Republican Bill Rabon will take over Senator R.C. Soles' position in the District 8 Senate, according to preliminary results.

Rabon won 67 percent of the votes, beating out Democrat David Redwine, who has worked with Soles in the past.

Redwine admitted early in the night that the race was going to be difficult for the Democrats, and he was right.

"Sometimes I think this race is a popularity contest," said Redwine.  "There are a lot of tough decisions to be made and running for high school vice president is a little different than running for state senate."

Rabon said he'll succeed in the position because he understands the needs of Columbus County and says cleaning up the school budget should be the top priority.

"You know, even though an elected job is not a political job, it's a business job," explained Rabon.  "I'm going to Raleigh to be a business man to serve the people and not to play career politician."

Rabon said he's excited for his first step into the state senate.
