NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Republican Thom Goolsby and Democrat Jim Leutze are both vying to represent New Hanover County in the state senate, replacing Senator Julia Boseman.
A day before the elections, Leutze was concerned about the Democratic vote. He spent time with supporters waiving signs at the corner of College and Oleander Roads.
"I can work with everyone," explained Leutze. "I am a consensus builder. I can work across party lines - work with Republicans. [I can] work across county lines, which is important - we have to or this area is going to lose clout."
In the final hours, Goolsby was a little more confident. He says the election has been good for the Republican party so far. He's excited that people are motivated to get the vote out.
"North Carolina is broken," said Goolsby. "The Democrats have racked up $3.5-5 billion in debt. We need to reduce spending and reduce taxes."
