BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Chief Deputy Prentis Benston won the most votes in the Bladen County sheriff's race Tuesday night, according to preliminary results.
Benston controlled the race by winning 52 percent of the vote, beating independent candidate Billy Ward.
The race for sheriff in Bladen County had many voters going out to cast their ballots Tuesday.
Bladen County Sheriff Steve Bunn shocked the community in June when he announced he was not running for re-election and that he was stepping down – months before his term was finished.
Benston was on his way to replacing Bunn after winning the Democratic primary election in June, beating out five other candidates for the spot. It looked like he would run unopposed in November, but just a few days after his victory Ward decided to challenge him.
Ward said he was eligible for the race because he would run as an independent. Right before the deadline hit, he was able to gather over 1,500 signatures, securing his spot on the mid-term election ballot.
