Your Turn: No screaming children sign controversy

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - I was right and I was wrong in my analysis last week of the massive viewer reaction to the "Screaming Children Will Not Be Tolerated" sign at Olde Salty's Restaurant in Carolina Beach.

I was pretty sure the strong reaction didn't have much to do with the restaurant owner's right or reasons for posting the sign -- and I was right about that.

But I theorized the immense interest in this story was connected to us becoming less tolerant over the years.  You told me in no uncertain terms that I was wrong.

What I learned in all of this is there is a lot of concern and anger out there about parents.  Most people think they aren't doing enough to discipline their children and they seem to be clueless about being courteous to others.

Here are a couple of samples from emails we received.  You can see many more at the bottom of my original editorial.

The problem today is that there is too much tolerance when it comes to children. All because we have established a whole "hands off" approach and too much of a "positive reinforcement" behavior approach to child rearing.  Spare the rod, spoil the child.....whatever happened to discipline?

It's called being considerate of others....if people wanted to hear out of hand kids screaming, crying and acting like little rug rats they would go to a place for small kids.

I'm guessing that wouldn't be Olde Salty's.

That's your turn on screaming children.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at
