MTYT: The difference a year can make

By Gary McNair - bio|email

Remember what the big news story was prior to the 9-11 attack in 2001?  It was the "Summer of the Shark."  Everyone apparently was bothered about what they thought was an increase in shark attacks.  Smaller things have a tendency of being put into perspective when something huge occurs.

Now think back to this time last year.  One of the big stories in the news was the outrage over President Obama's Back to School Address.  Some thought the President would make a political message to our children.  They said that's not right.  Brunswick County Schools were like several school districts across the country in not allowing students to watch it unless parents gave permission.

The President gave his speech.  For those who saw it, they survived and they weren't brainwashed.

Well guess what?  The president gave his back to school speech again this week.  Where's the outrage this time?  You didn't hear it because it didn't happen.

That's because we have bigger fish to fry.  The economy has yet to recover.  Unemployment is still wavering around 10 percent.  The administration is trying to wrap up one war while getting a handle on another one.  And elections are right around the corner.

Thinking back to last year – if the big battle was over a speech to our children…things must not have been too bad.  What a difference a year makes.
