Students plant rain garden at Bradley Creek Elementary

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Some third graders in New Hanover County traded their pencils and papers for shovels and rakes Wednesday.
Students at Bradley Creek Elementary planted a new storm water wetland near the back of the school. It's one of four wetland projects sponsored by the Coastal Federation.
They planted dozens of plants, flowers and shrubs on the 15-acre campus. It's designed to catch storm water runoff so it does not reach Hewlett's Creek.
"We wanted the students and teachers to have ownership of these projects because it's on their property," said Ted Wilgis with the NC Coastal Federation. "We want them to use it as living classrooms so students can actually feel like I did something. I have ownership of my connection to the local environment."
A total of $48,000 is being provided for all of the projects.
